Who Should Attend:
This two-day course is designed for beginner engineers looking to reinforce their college training, veteran engineers experienced in other disciplines who are new to the electric power industry or cross-training from other non-distribution job functions, or advanced technicians with electric distribution experience but limited formal training in electrical calculations.
Competency in college-level math, an understanding of electric circuit theory, and a basic knowledge of electric system equipment are necessary. An understanding of AC power fundamentals is recommended. For those lacking this experience, prior attendance of the Power Utility Institute: Electrical Calculations I – Introduction course is strongly advised. This course may be a prerequisite for certain other Power Utility Institute courses.
The course provides a brief review of fundamental AC power calculations, and then covers voltage drop calculations for distribution circuits, voltage regulation and control, application of shunt capacitors, Thevenin modeling, network reduction, and basic fault concepts.
The course includes in-class problems and homework, providing opportunities to apply the concepts presented. Upon completion of this course, participants will have the skills to perform basic AC circuit calculations and electric system analysis, and will have a foundation for more advanced studies, Students must bring an engineering or scientific calculator they are proficient with, and be familiar with its trigonometric functions.
