General Session:

Interconnection of Distributed Energy Resources:
Present Day Approaches, Standards, Protection Issues & Future Trends

by Phil Barker, Nova Energy Specialists, LLC

Interconnection of DER to the power distribution system is a complex and technical challenge considering the system, as it has evolved over the past century, wasn’t originally designed with these generation devices in mind.

Neutral grounding compatibility of DG, a high degree of variability in power output, and common practices employed for distribution system overcurrent protection and voltage regulation are often based on radial power flows, and not always suited for downstream generation devices, especially as higher penetration DER is starting to occur on many feeder circuits.

This session reviews the issues, approaches, standards and future trends in DER interface that the industry wrestles with.
