Part of ECNE's Power Utility Institute (PUI), the Leadership I Program is scheduled on October 16 - 18, 2019. The course will take place in the Manchester, NH area and is hosted by Liberty Utilities.
Participants may elect to attend one, two or all three days of the program.
About the Program:
The primary focus of Leadership I is management of self and an appreciation of the differences found in others.
The sessions promote self-reflection to identify personal strengths, an awareness of the strengths in different behavioral styles and to adapt their suite of styles to increase effectiveness in leading others. The end result is a highly interactive and personalized professional development experience.
A combination of teaching methods are employed, including group exercises, individual work, lecture and class discussion.
Advance course work is required for the program, including completion of a behavioral profile (DiSC) and study of a negotiation text.
Oct. 16: Behavioral Profiles: Understanding Your Impact on Others & Adapting Your Style for Greater Effectiveness
A critical component of leadership is an understanding of yourself and knowing how you impact others, whether consciously or unconsciously. Effective leaders incorporate a non-judgmental approach to different behavioral styles, and know how to capitalize on the strengths of each style. You will analyze and get feedback on your own communication and work style, learn to appreciate other styles, and be able to adapt your style to effectively lead others.

Oct. 17: Negotiation Skills Workshop
Based upon Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In by Fisher, Ury & Patton, this workshop provides an understanding of interest-based or “principled” negotiation techniques. Learn:
- Structure a process that promotes joint problem solving and collaboration
- Recognize when to accept and when to walk away from a deal
- Respond to threats & uncooperative behaviors
- Separate the people from the problem
Chuck Doran is Founder of MWI, a dispute resolution service and training organization located in Boston. He is an experienced mediator, trainer and ombudsman, specializing in the resolution of business, employment and workforce disputes. His expertise has assisted Coca Cola Enterprises, Bose, General Motors and the Harvard Negotiation Project at Harvard Law School.
Oct. 18: Difficult Conversations: One-on-One and with Teams
As a leader your approach to communication has far-reaching impact beyond the immediate communication itself. This session begins with foundational skills and progresses into coaching and handling difficult conversations. It builds upon the prior two sessions to enhance one-on-one and team communication. Skills covered include:
- Managing difficult conversations (multi-directional) one-on-one and teams
- Listening effectiveness
- Asking the right questions the right way
- Providing feedback and feed forward coaching
- Coaching for improved performance
- Dealing with difficult behaviors
David Gilman is President of Gilman Performance Systems, an ECNE partner for over 7 years. David has worked with a number of Utilities providing over 20 different workshops and services for the past 15 years. David Gilman is the former Manager of Training for an entire division of General Electric and has been delivering Leadership and Management programs focusing around communication for over 20 years.
